XQuartz The XQuartz project is an open-source effort to develop a version of the X.Org X Window System that runs on macOS. Together with supporting libraries and applications, it forms the X11.app that Apple shipped with OS X versions 10.5 through 10.7. XQuartz - an open source X Window System for macOS. Your Mac might have Apple's native X11.app installed, which can be used but is not recommended.
It renders text much better than Firefox on a Retina display. They’re different but neither is outright better on a non-Retina display. I’m pretty sure Firefox on OSX supports Retina, so I don’t know why the text rendering is inferior. I know you can use Xquartz to get windows from a remote Linux machine, but is it possible to do it the other way around? That is, is it possible to use X forwarding to get windows from a remote Macintosh machine? Retina display support for XQuartz X11 applications. XQuartz is a windowing system on its own, just installing it doesn't change anything. If you need to run application requiring X11/XQuartz, you need to start the Xquartz app (aka X11 server) before you start the application. The X11 server will then run 'on top' of OS X, so the behaviour of other applications doesn't change.

Important Info for 10.5 Users
OS X Software Updates have included some of the work done by the XQuartz project, but for various reasons, Apple cannot ship the latest and greatest version offered by the XQuartz site. Since the XQuartz X11 package clobbers Apple's X11.app, their software update will clobber the XQuartz X11 package. Because of this, you may experience conflicts after doing a Software Update from Apple. Please re-install the latest XQuartz X11 release for Leopard after installing a system software update to OS X 10.5.x Leopard.
